One of the biggest problems for Whakatane is the number of firms in the service sector and their geographical dispersion from the town centre.  A rates holiday for new commercial office buildings in the very centre of town may encourage both consolidation of firms, as well as new construction.

The Council last year adopted the Whakatane Town Vision, which focusses on the CBD area. A Town Vision Advisory Board which is yet to be constituted, will be responsible for developing the Vision further and to implement the plan. The Board will be able to consider ways to strengthen the CBD area and make recommendations to the Council. Just a note on the rates holiday, granting a holiday  would mean the rest of the community would have to bear these. What do other people think of this idea?
